Nonie of Beverly Hills

Nonie products are Healthy Food for the Skin!  Our product line is easy to use – simply cleanse, tone, and select the Nonie moisturizer appropriate for your skin type.  All Nonie moisturizers contain AHAs – Alpha Hydroxy Acids from extracts of Bilberry, Sugar Cane, Maple Cane, Orange and Lemon Oils.  AHAs gently exfoliate the skin by loosening built-up dead skin, improve skin tone and texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, increase cell renewal and help lighten age spots. Using our Cleanser, Tonic and Moisturizer, there’s no need for a separate make-up remover, eye cream or scrub.  The Nonie line does not contain any animal products and is never tested on animals, so it is excellent for vegans and vegetarians!

Amazing 20% Line Drive during May!

SKIN CLEANSER: A gentle cleansing lotion for all skin types which leaves the skin clean, soft and moist with closed pores. Is also an excellent eye and make-up remover. For best results, use without water!  Apply to dry face and neck using cotton pads.  Repeat until the cotton appears absolutely clean.  Follow with AHA! Skin Tonic & Moisturizer.  Continued use produces a more youthful appearing skin.  Will not burn eyes and safe to use for contact lens wearers.  Can also be used as a gentle shaving lotion.

SKIN TONIC: A dewy fluid that refreshes and tightens the pores, giving a smooth texture to the skin.  The main ingredient is Hamamelis water, which is a refined witch hazel. We only use grapefruit seed extract as the natural preservative. After cleansing the skin, apply to face and neck using cotton pads.  Is also an effective and soothing, non-stinging aftershave. Contains built-in natural bacterial protection to aid in preventing infections from nicks and cuts.  The light lemony scent is not a perfume but a combination of five different essential oils of citrus, so the scent will not linger.

BRILLIANT MOISTURIZER: This moisturizer is excellent for normal and combination skin . . . equally effective for the oily areas (i.e., T-Zone) as well as other areas. It contains 5% AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) in a moisturizing base of coconut oil, almond oil, and gluten-free wheat germ oil. Gentle enough to use around the delicate eye area.  Use day and night.

PROTEIN MOISTURIZER: This moisturizer is wonderful for dry skin, mature skin, and vegans. It contains 5% AHA. This moisturizer also contains orchid oil, which acts as a buffer for the skin to absorb the AHA’s. Sometimes people with dry or mature skin are more sensitive, so the orchid oil helps soothe the skin. This cream is called Protein because of the protein from organic, non-GMO soy milk we use. It contains more gluten-free wheat germ oil, so it is richer but not heavier than the Brilliant Moisturizer.  Gentle enough to use around the delicate eye area.  Use day and night.

NEW CONDITION: This moisturizer is great for those with oily or problem skin that is prone to breakouts. It has many essential oils beneficial to oily skin care such as tea tree, peppermint and eucalyptus. It contains 5% AHA. This cream can also be used around the eye area. Don’t let the tea tree oil scare you…. this also is a very gentle cream. The combination of the oil of seed of grapefruit and the essential oils help in clearing up breakouts and the AHA’s exfoliate the dead skin cells gently and microscopically without leaving any scars, which can happen if you use heavy scrubs on skin with breakouts.  Use day and night.

BODY LOTION: You’ll find orchid oil in this fantastic body lotion. Easily absorbs into the skin imparting a wonderful sheen without being greasy. A little bit goes a long way. Has a light, lemony scent from the natural citrus oils that does not linger. Use after bathing or anytime your skin is feeling dry.  Excellent on feet, hands and the entire body!  Contains less than 2% AHA naturally forming from fruits so it is excellent for the entire family.  Can also be used on the face.

8 SPF MOISTURIZER: This is the same formula as our Brilliant Moisturizer, with the addition of orchid oil and micronized Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. They are natural, physical sun blockers.

15 SPF MOISTURIZER:  This is the same as our Body Lotion with the addition of orchid oil and micronized Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.  They are natural, physical sun blockers.

10% AHA: This moisturizer is same formula as the Brilliant Moisturizer, with the addition of orchid oil and 10% AHA instead of 5%. The 10% AHA! should be used by those who have already been using Alpha Hydroxy Acids or receiving professional facial treatments.

HIS! Shave Cream:  A non-foaming cream that provides a close, comfortable shave for men and women!  Contains built-in natural bacterial protection from Hamamelis water, Tea Tree,  and Grapefruit Seed Extract to aid in preventing infections from nicks and cuts.  Gives a smooth texture to the skin.  Refreshes and tightens the pores.  Will not burn or sting and can be used around the eyes.

DIY Gifts for Your Favorite Foodies!

Dipping Oils and Flavored Vinegar

Written by Gayle

These gifts for foodies are so much fun to make and give! The vinegar takes about a month for the flavors to “marry”, so be sure to let your loved one know before they pop it open for a tasty salad!

Flavored Vinegar

easy+DIY+gifts, holiday+gifts, homemade+gifts, flavored+vinegar

Place your chosen flavorings in a quart-sized jar. For these three, I used
Raspberries and fresh mint leaves (I used champagne vinegar)
Slices of lemon peel, sliced garlic cloves, chopped fresh rosemary (I used white wine vinegar)
Fresh cranberries (I used rice vinegar)

Pour the vinegar over the items into the jars. Cover with a non-metal lid (or put a piece of plastic wrap between the lid and the jar). Refrigerate for about three to four weeks, swirling it around every day.

After a month or so, pour the contents through a strainer and then into your chosen bottles (with a funnel). Add a gift tag (mine were just printable business cards that I got at an office supply store) with a ribbon. Viola!

Italian Sun-Dried Tomato Dipping Oil

easy+DIY+gifts, holiday+gifts, homemade+gifts, italian+dipping+oil

I love to use dipping oil on bread when we eat Italian food. Here’s a simple recipe to do it yourself!

1/4 tsp each dried italian herbs–basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary
1 TBSP chopped sun-dried tomato (the kind that is packed in oil)
2 cloves minced garlic
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly-ground pepper
1/2 TBSP chopped fresh organic parsley
3 TBSP grated organic parmesan cheese
2 cups Organic Extra-virgin Olive Oil

In a small pan, heat 1/4 cup of olive oil. add the herbs and the garlic, and just heat until softened.
Remove from the heat and let cool. Add the rest of the ingredients and the rest of the oil and then blend well. Pour into a bottle and allow to sit for several hours before serving. You can pour into gift bottles and spread a bit of your kitchen magic around to your friends and family! These should be used within about a week, or kept in the refrigerator.

Cool Summer Drinks–Healthy and Easy!

It’s Not All About Soda, Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks

You can see I had to drink some of them!  And I ate a few grapes, too!
This morning I whipped up these babies–perfect for some hot summer afternoons!

So Different and Delicious!

I am not much of a juice drinker–I love my ice water–but for these I will make an exception.  Pure ingredients, healthy, fresh–Absolutely no guilt here!

No Juicer Required!

I made these delicious drinks with just a blender, so let’s get started., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Rosemary Cucumber Limeade

You will need:

  • 3 large organic cucumbers
  • 2 TBSP chopped fresh organic rosemary, plus four springs for garnish  (This recipe could also be made with fresh organic mint or basil, for a different taste sensation!)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup fresh organic lime juice
  • 3+ TBSP organic Agave Syrup (to taste), Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade
Score a cucumber lengthwise with a fork.  This will give your decorative slices a finished look.  Then cut 12 thin slices of cucumber for garnish., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Peel and chop the rest of the cucumbers, place in your blender, along with the chopped fresh rosemary., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Puree until there are no chunks and the rosemary is well incorporated.  You’ll need to stop the blender and scrape down the sides., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Pour the puree into a fine-mesh strainer which has been set over a bowl., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Push the solids a bit to get the juice into the bowl.  If you like a very clear juice, use cheesecloth.  I like more solids, so I pushed quite a bit through the strainer., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Squeeze the limes until you have 1/2 cup, then add the lime juice, the water, and the agave syrup to the cucumber/rosemary juice., Lassen's, Lassens, Summer+drinks, Rosemary+cucumber+limeade

Taste and add more agave if you’d like.
Fill four glasses half-way with ice, then pour 1/4 of juice into each glass.  Garnish with cucumber slices and a spring of rosemary.

Make your own soda with healthy ingredients?  Yes!

summer+drinks, grape+soda

Fresh Grape Soda

Wash and stem the grapes, and then puree in a blender until fine.  Pour the puree into a strainer, which has been placed over a medium bowl.  Press on the solids to extract the juice.

Add the lemon juice and the honey, and stir well until the honey is well incorporated.

Add the sparkling water, and mix.  Pour the mixture into four, ice-filled glasses, and garnish with a small bunch of grapes.

The Best Beach Blanket in the World

That Might Be a Little Over the Top…

Written by Gayle, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket+, denim+blanket, up+cycle
In April I wrote the post called Earth Day Every Day.  I mentioned several things that we can do to take better care of our beautiful earth.  And now that summer is upon us, I thought I’d do a Jeans Blanket tutorial for those of you who would like to reuse your old denim jeans.  If you have a sewing machine and the ability to sew a straight seam, you can make this blanket!  And it really is the best beach blanket in the world!  The sand just shakes off.  Everyone on the beach will be totally jealous!

First, you have to cut your squares, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

The easiest thing is to use a self-healing mat and a rotary cutter, but if you don’t have that, just cut squares with scissors. Before I had a mat and cutter, I made square cardboard tempates and then used a marker to draw the square on the denim, and then cut them with scissors., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

It’s really important the the square are equal and even.  I used 8″ squares for this blanket, but you can use whatever you’ve got., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

I just collect jeans for quite a while until I have enough to make a blanket.  You can see that I made sure I cut the squares in line with the lines of the fabric.  Make sure you do this, otherwise the squares will stretch where they shouldn’t., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Decide Your Size, and Arrange the Squares, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle
I had lots of squares of a fairly lightweight denim, so I decided to make a larger blanket this time–seven squares by nine squares.  I usually do six by eight.  I like to alternate dark and light, and throw a few pockets in the mix, too.

Start Patching the Squares Together, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle
I like to leave the squares on the floor and just pick them one at a time to pin them together.  Pin and then sew.  Sew a whole row together in either direction., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

This first row is pinned together.  Then sew all of the seams., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

I sew all of the rows together first., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

The seams in all of these rows have also been ironed open., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Time to Sew the Rows!, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle
Pin two rows together, with the seams matching.  Keep the seams open, as ironed, as you sew the rows together., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

It should look like this., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Iron the seams open after each seam sewed., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

This is the back after all of the rows are sewn together and ironed.

Now the Tricky Part., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle
For the back of my blanket I used a piece of fabric that I had lying around in my fabric stash.  Because my blanket is a little larger, I had to piece two widths of fabric together, but when I do a smaller blanket I can just use a single width of 44-45″ fabric for the back., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Lay your backing fabric, right side down, on the floor.  Smooth it out, and then lay the denim patchwork piece on top of it, right side up.  If you have someone to help you hold everything smooth and straight, that will help.  But just make sure there are no wrinkles on either the top or the bottom.  Make sure the backing fabric is about about 1&1/2 to 2 inches wider than the denim patchwork piece on all sides., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Then start pinning with large safety pins (you can find these in fabric stores in the quilting department.) I pin in the middle of the squares, not at the junctions, since that is where I sew the back and the front together., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

It takes a lot of pins!, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Pin all the way to the edge, too., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Now You Can Do Some Machine Quilting!

This is the easiest machine quilting in the world.  Straight stitches–making an “X” over each square.  Start in a corner and just sew straight across all of the squares.  One exception:  the squares with pockets.  I always sew around the pockets so that I can stash my lip balm or a granola bar in them, if I wish!, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Keep the pins on until you are completely finished doing the machine quilting., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

I do not have a long-arm sewing machine, so I just roll up the excess blanket on the right side to fit the through the machine as I sew the lines.  Make sure you hold the fabric firmly so that you don’t get any puckers in the seams., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

When you get to the end of the line, just make a right turn and start another diagonal line., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

And if your lines aren’t straight, who cares?  The straight-line police won’t confiscate your blanket, I promise!  (And the lines will look a lot better after the quilting fairies come at night and straighten everything out.)  When every square has an “X” sewn on it, remove all of the pins., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Now for the Edge…, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle
Fold the edge of your backing fabric around the edge of the denim evenly and pin.  Start sewing right next to the left edge of the turned piece., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

OK, Now the Corners.

Again, not as hard as they seem.  First, fold and then pin the backing fabric like this., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

You can see that the denim is not folded at all, but the backing fabric is folded right at that corner., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Then fold the two edges right up into that corner.  You may have to play with it a little to get it right, but if you keep the first folds (to the corner) flat and straight, this will be easier., Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Again, if it’s not quite perfect, so what?, Lassen's, Lassens, jeans+blanket, denim+blanket, up+cycle

Here is the completed blanket–ready for the beach or the park, or anyplace you want a sturdy, easy to clean blanket.  You know it will wash well, too!  These make great gifts, so stop throwing those old holey jeans in the trash, and start cutting denim squares!  No more old jeans in the landfill!
Have a great summer!

It’s Almost Spring! Time to Get Your Hands in the Dirt!

Nothing Like Getting Dirty!

I love going into garden centers and seeing all of the little plants; It takes me back to when my mom and dad (with a lot of forced kid labor!) would plant a great big garden each spring.
And checking out all of the neatly lined-up packets of garden seeds–Oh!  The possibilities!  We would start the tomatoes from seed in egg cartons, and I loved checking to see if the little leaves were pressing their way through the soil.
So in honor of impending Spring, here is a fun idea to start your garden, kitchen herbs, or flowers.
Since we’ve been eating a lot of grapefruit lately (it is SO delicious!) we have plenty of grapefruit rinds.  You could also use orange or lemon rinds, too.  I pulled the membranes out of the rinds, but that isn’t necessary.
You’ll need some potting soil–or just some rich dirt–and some seeds.  Lassen’s has just stocked a large variety of organic garden seeds.
Fill the rind with some soil.  Doesn’t that feel good?
I decided to plant Sweet Basil, since I cook with it every week.
Sprinkle a few seeds over the soil, and then add 1/4 inch more of soil on the top.  Water lightly (it doesn’t take much in this little planter,
and you don’t want the rind to get moldy!)
Place in a warm sunny place, and watch for the sprouts!
There’s nothing like using your own fresh herbs!
You can start tomatoes or peas or beans or other vegetables in the citris rinds, and when it is time to plant in your garden (or larger containers), you can just put the whole thing in the ground.  The rinds will decompose and enrich your garden soil!  You’ll be both gardening and composting!  Now, doesn’t that make you feel green?
Happy Gardening!

Mother’s Day All Natural Homemade Solid Perfume

She could be the woman who brought you into this world. She could be the woman who raised you, fed you, clothed you. She could be a trusted friend, confidante or mentor.
She may have been the one you ran from when it was bath time
or the one who you ran to when the world seemed scary.
She may be somewhere very close or somewhere very distant, but
she’s right there with you every time you do a good deed and show kindness to another.

Whoever Mother is to you, Sunday, May 13th is HER DAY!

Let’s make it special!, Lassen's, Mother's+Day, DYI+Solid+Perfume

When I was little I used to do arts and crafts in school for Mother’s Day;

writing a silly poem using the letters in the word “MOTHER”, gluing noodles to a sheet of construction paper in the shape a flower or frosting cupcakes with hot pink (and practically inedible) sugar paste.
As I’ve grown up all of the drawings, poems & baking atrocities that my Mom treasured have been replaced by neat, clean and paid for flowers and chocolates (which, given the past, I’m sure she appreciates). However, I know that there’s something about the handmade gift that touches a parent’s heart more than anything money can buy.

mothers+day, DIY+solid+perfume

This Mother’s Day I’d like to share a recipe for a solid perfume using beeswax and essential oils.

Until recently, I hadn’t ever heard of solid perfume. I found that it has its roots in Egyptian history as a scented balm that is rubbed on the skin using fingers or (in modern times) a cotton swab. It has since been modified and and redesigned to be more compact and portable. I like this idea for a Mother’s Day gift because it allows for you to be very specific to your Mom’s taste. You can make a custom fragrance based on smells that you know she likes or ones that remind you of her. For instance, I’m going to make my mom a rose perfume because of a memory that I have as a child of my mom growing roses in the backyard.

Without further ado, I give you…

Homemade All Natural Solid Perfume for Mom

You will need:
• 1 Tbsp grated organic beeswax or beeswax beads (affordably available in bulk at select Lassens locations!)
• 1 tsp Now jojoba oil
• 12- 16 drops Aura Cacia organic essential oil fragrance of choice.
• 1 glass jar
• 1 small cooking pot
• 1 decorative container or perfume locket

(Note: In these images I tripled the recipe to fill 2 larger candy containers.
The recipe as follows make about 2 Tablespoons worth of perfume.
You may adjust recipe depending on amount of perfume needed.)
Pour beeswax into glass jar.

Place glass jar in small pot. Fill pot with 2-3 inches of boiling water and on stove top on low.

Once the wax begins to melt turn off the heat. Stir wax (with the other hot-pad protected hand securing the jar in the pot)

add essential oils and jojoba oil.

Pour mixture into decorative container and let cool.

DIY Container Ideas:

Find an antique perfume locket at a thrift store or online and fill it with the perfume.
For a personal touch, pour mixture into and old mint or candy tin.
I used 2 old Xyla mint tins that happened to already have beautiful quotes on the inside lid.

Paint the outside with chalk paint (this will take a few layers of paint) and write a special message to Mom!

Pair your solid perfume with a complementary organic chocolate bar and flowers (after-all, I’m sure she still loves your grown-up gifts).
