In A Hurry?

Sometimes You Just Need A Quick Solution

I’ve always worked hard to make sure my family has healthy meals, and that often means lots of work.  But there are lots of times when there just isn’t enough, well, time to put into a home-cooked meal.
With all of the sports and music lessons and other activities at our household, there were times when I was tempted to make toast and call it dinner.
Luckily, we have lots of solutions here at Lassen’s for the time-crunch with which most families struggle.  From frozen burritos and pizzas to our house-made soups and other hot items from our deli you can find lots of fast and easy meals.  But here is one of my favorite simple solutions–

Seeds of Change Simmer Sauces

seeds+of+change, easy+dinner, dinner+in+a+hurry, Indian+Stir+Sauces
We love Indian food!  These sauces make what can be very complicated cuisine into something easy.  I always have a couple of jars of these in my pantry.
Simply saute some chicken, beef, fish, or tofu until done, add a jar of the sauce and simmer for 10 minutes.  I usually roast some vegetables like asparagus or green beans (shown here with some pine nuts), and with some rice we have a complete meal.  I throw some chopped cilantro on the Takka Masala, just because I love the stuff!  (Add raisins to the Korma Sauce–it’s delicious!)

Even without the meat or tofu, you can have a very tasty dinner!  And you can serve this meal within about 20-30 minutes, start to finish.
So look for quick time-saving meal options, like Seeds of Change Simmer Sauces, next time you’re at Lassen’s!
Have a great dinner tonight!

Another company “does the right thing”

Just a TOUCH of sarcasm, hereā€¦

Remember when I told you about Electro-Mix?  One of my objections to most popular sports drinks is that they contain many artificial coloring, flavorings, and chemicals.

Well, now I have good reason to have been wary of those chemicals.  A recent LA Times story reveals that one popular brand (in fact, they practically invented the whole concept of a sports-drink!) has included brominated vegetable oil.  Doesn’t sound too bad, until you find out that brominated vegetable oil is a synthetic chemical that “has been patented in Europe as a flame retardant.”  Yuck!

Are you SERIOUS???

The chemical is banned in Japan and the European Union.  Studies on mice have shown “reproductive and behavioral problems” in animals that have consumed large doses of the chemical.  This chemical “could be building up in human tissues.”  This additive is used in other popular sports and soft drinks as well.

This chemical is an emulsifier to distribute the coloring in the drink.  The Times article announced that after an online petition with more than 200,000 signatures was sent to the producer of the sports drink, the company will no longer put this chemical in its product.

Now it is going to add another unpronouncable chemical as an emulsifier: sucrose acetate isobutyrate.  And how long will it be before this chemical is found to have negative side effects, too?

Avoiding chemicals has always been a goal of the Natural Foods movement.  It seems that we regularly get news that ingredients in commercial products are not as safe as the manufacturers have claimed.

So instead of using those chemical-laden products, here are two more to try.

Vega+Sport, Electrolyte+Hydrator

Vega Sport has a Electrolyte Hydrator that is similar to Alacer’s Electro-Mix.  It is dairy, gluten and soy free, replenishes electrolytes and minerals.

Vega Sport’s products are 100% plant based as well, with no artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners.  The packets are so convenient to tuck into a pocket or pack and easy to add to your water for instant electrolyte replacement!

And of course, for many years Lassen’s has carried Recharge, a natural hydration drink, made by the R.W. Knudsen Juice company.  All natural, Recharge is made without added sugar or artificial colors or flavors.

Recharge comes in 6 flavors, including Organic Lemon.

Lassen’s carries thousands of products that have no artificial colorings, flavorings, or additives.

Here’s to happy and healthy hydration!

Team Member Spotlight in Thousand Oaks

Welcome to the Thousand Oaks Lassen’s!
Today I’d like to introduce you to one of our team members:
Our Thousand Oaks Manager

Brian has worked at Lassen’s for more than nine years!  He even knows the date that he started–October 7!
Brian was born and raised in Ventura, and he love this area.  He says he’s traveled to and enjoyed a lots of places, but he can’t see himself living anywhere else.
Brian loves picnics.  Get some crusty bread, some amazing cheese, go to the beach and you’ve made Brian happy.  He also really likes to throw dinner parties and cook amazing dishes to entertain his friends.  Brian has found that he uses so much that he’s learned while working at Lassen’s when he cooks and entertains.  He especially loves to use our beautiful organic produce.

When I asked Brian for some of his favorite products, he immediately mentioned these beautiful Organic Gold Grapefruit.  They are so delicious right now, and are on sale for 99 cents per pound.

We get these gorgeous organic grapefruit from a farm near Bakersfield–yum!  We also get amazing TDE Mandarins from them, which are just coming into their season.
Watch for them!
Brian’s hero is his dad, who is a military man–he has been deployed in Afganistan.  Brian called him a rock in his life.  Of course, Brian admitted that he had to grow up a little to appreciate his dad, but now he considers him his hero.
Brian’s two favorite things about working at Lassen’s are customer service and produce. It’s like the two sides of his personality–the physical and artistic side that is put to work when he works on the produce, and the intellectual and emotional side that is called upon when he is helping customers.
He really loves to help people–he said it’s easily the highlight of his job!
Thousand+Oaks, Holy+Basil
Brian is holding two more of his favorite products–Cambozola Cheese, and Holy Basil.
Cambozola Cheese is a double cream blue cheese.  Brian says that he serves it regularly when he entertains.  His favorite way to serve it is stuffed inside fresh figs!  It’s also great with apples or pears or dried figs, if fresh are not available.
Holy Basil is a great supplement for calming and centering and stress reducing.  Brian is holding a bottle of capsules, but if you prefer, Holy Basil is also available as the main ingredient in several herbal tea blends.
Thousand+Oaks, Organic+India,

When I asked Brian what he would change about the world, he said he would wish for equality.
He said, “Then peace would come.”
Thanks, Brian!
Stop into the Thousand Oaks Lassen’s, and ask Brian for some other great recommmendations!
