Want to know what all the fuss is about juicing? Joe Cross set out on his own journey to better health by juicing for 60 days. He made his film, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (click here for his website) documenting his journey. For sixty days he only drank juice. The film inspired me to juice more often. You can watch the trailer for the film here.
Today I ran a terrific variety of fruits and vegetables through my juicer for lunch. Carrots, cucumber, pineapple, and apples made a great pick-me up!
Of course, the benefits of juicing is not just great taste. Juicing is a great way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Spinach, kale, and other greens are a terrific addition to juices, and the vitamins and minerals are preserved when they are juiced.
Sometimes a few days of juicing is a great way to detox. We live in a time when our diets are often cluttered with too much of the unhealthy stuff and too little of the pure. I find that when I cut out the fluff and focus on eating the basics, I feel much better. A few days of juicing reminds me of the way I really want to eat all of the time.
Of course, keeping fiber in our diets is very important to our digestion, and all of the fiber is removed when the fruits and vegetables are juiced. So you may want to add blending with juicing. With blending, you are making a smoothie–all of the fiber is retained.
I like to combine juicing and blending. I juice a 5 lb bag of carrots, several cucumbers and two bunches of celery. Then I refrigerate that juice blend and use it as the base (along with almond milk or coconut water) for my smoothies.
It’s an easy breakfast–put a cup of my juice base in the blender, then add kale, spinach, berries, pineapple, mango, papaya, bananas, apples or whatever else I have in the refrigerator. Pop a muffin or sprouted bread in the toaster/oven and I’m set to go.
Of course, I love to stop by Lassen’s Deli and order my own Green Monster (with lemon and extra ice) or whatever smoothie strikes my fancy that day. We have a large variety of great juices for health and detox, as well as just for a meal or snack.
Don’t be afraid to jump into juicing and blending! You will find yourself more in touch with how you really feel!
