Old-Fashioned Cracked Wheat Breakfast
Quick & Easy
Heading Back to my Childhood

I was practically raised on hot cereal, and so now I feel completely nourished whenever I have it. Tossing it in the crock pot the night before is a great way to get a head-start on the hectic morning routine. Give this a try, and you'll feel healthy all day! This makes a lot, but it is really easy to reheat the leftovers for additional meals! And it is really easy to switch up ingredients to make your own custom hot cereal mix!
Makes 6 servings
Ingredients
3/4 cup cracked wheat
3 1/2 cups water
1/3 cup dried apples (diced) or other dried fruit such as raisins, cranberries, blueberries or cherries
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cardamom
Pinch of salt
3 1/2 cups water
1/3 cup dried apples (diced) or other dried fruit such as raisins, cranberries, blueberries or cherries
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cardamom
Pinch of salt
Directions
Combine all of the ingredients in a crock pot. Right before bed, turn the crock pot on LOW.
Cook 6-7 hours.
Stir before serving.
We like our cracked wheat cereal with a little honey or other sweetener, and a bit of cream or coconut butter.
NOTE: If you would like to try this recipe in the oven, rather than the crock pot, just combine your ingredients in a casserole dish that has a well-fitting lid. Cast iron cookery works well. The oven should be set to 190 degrees.
Enjoy the warmth of a hot cereal on your next cool morning, without standing over the stove and stirring!
