Deodorant Detox!

Deodorant Detox!

Written by Denae

Have you wanted to take the plunge from conventional deodorants but every time you try you just stink yourself out? EO Products, a wonderful organic & natural company, has dedicated their 2017 to helping everyone willing to take the challenge! Not only have they provided enlightening information like, “…there can be a transition period (up to 30 days) where body odor can actually increase…? but they have even perfected the list of must-have’s as you begin your transition.

EO Certified Organic Deodorant Spray
EO Natural Deodorant Wipes
EO Bubble Bath
EO Salt Soak
EO Ageless Moroccan Lava Clay

Those last three – the ones that have nothing to do with armpits, are to help you relax. Detoxing is stressful, especially if you don’t know how your experience will be. However, that added stress can create more body odor, which will turn in to a stinky cycle of stressing about body odor, creating more body odor, creating more stress. So pick up some bath salts and relax a little!

Committing to a detox might sound scary, but hey, at least it’s not a juice cleanse and you get to eat still! When you start your detox adventure, make sure you drink LOTS of water. And although you are eating, here are some foods to stay away from that can increase your body odor:

Cruciferous Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, arugula, etc)
Junk Food
Red Meat
Spicy Food

Checkout EO’s amazing write-up about their 30 Day Challenge!

Below is your personal detox calendar that you can print off, post, and proudly mark off each day as you detox your body from phthalates and aluminum.

DIY Gifts for Your Favorite Foodies!

Dipping Oils and Flavored Vinegar

Written by Gayle

These gifts for foodies are so much fun to make and give! The vinegar takes about a month for the flavors to “marry”, so be sure to let your loved one know before they pop it open for a tasty salad!

Flavored Vinegar

easy+DIY+gifts, holiday+gifts, homemade+gifts, flavored+vinegar

Place your chosen flavorings in a quart-sized jar. For these three, I used
Raspberries and fresh mint leaves (I used champagne vinegar)
Slices of lemon peel, sliced garlic cloves, chopped fresh rosemary (I used white wine vinegar)
Fresh cranberries (I used rice vinegar)

Pour the vinegar over the items into the jars. Cover with a non-metal lid (or put a piece of plastic wrap between the lid and the jar). Refrigerate for about three to four weeks, swirling it around every day.

After a month or so, pour the contents through a strainer and then into your chosen bottles (with a funnel). Add a gift tag (mine were just printable business cards that I got at an office supply store) with a ribbon. Viola!

Italian Sun-Dried Tomato Dipping Oil

easy+DIY+gifts, holiday+gifts, homemade+gifts, italian+dipping+oil

I love to use dipping oil on bread when we eat Italian food. Here’s a simple recipe to do it yourself!

1/4 tsp each dried italian herbs–basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary
1 TBSP chopped sun-dried tomato (the kind that is packed in oil)
2 cloves minced garlic
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly-ground pepper
1/2 TBSP chopped fresh organic parsley
3 TBSP grated organic parmesan cheese
2 cups Organic Extra-virgin Olive Oil

In a small pan, heat 1/4 cup of olive oil. add the herbs and the garlic, and just heat until softened.
Remove from the heat and let cool. Add the rest of the ingredients and the rest of the oil and then blend well. Pour into a bottle and allow to sit for several hours before serving. You can pour into gift bottles and spread a bit of your kitchen magic around to your friends and family! These should be used within about a week, or kept in the refrigerator.

Holiday Countdown Part 1: Stocking – Stuffers!

Stocking Stuffer Ideas

It’s officially December! Don’t tell me that there aren’t flurries of cottony snow falling gently on my eyelashes. Don’t say that around the corner there isn’t a frozen lake full of families ice skating and sledding down the powder covered hills. Do not attempt to look me in the eye and explain that there aren’t Douglas Firs growing tall and proud as far as the eye can see that twinkle with fresh white snow. I know that I’m living in Southern California, but just don’t tell me! One of the many wonderful things that this season brings are the winter dreams that flood your mind when December finally arrives.

Yessiree Bob, the Holidays are almost here! To bring us straight into the spirit of giving, here are some awesome and unique little stocking – stuffer ideas that will make this season bright, wholesome and healthy!

stocking+stuffers, bath+bombs

Hugo Naturals Vanilla Peppermint Cupcake Fizzy Bath Bomb
Possibly the most adorable thing to contain the word “bomb”.
With their humble beginnings selling hand crafted soap at Farmer’s Markets, Hugo Naturals products strive to provide the public with clean and honest products that contain no parabans, soy or gluten but are vegan, cruelty free and are made from 100% natural ingredients!
stocking+stuffers, nail+polish

No Miss Holiday One Coat Polish

Making nails fancy and festive without, you know… destroying them!

Do NOT Contain: Formaldehyde, Toluene, Dibutyl-Pthalate or Camphor.
However, does contain joy, cheer and holiday jubilance!

Triloka Premium Incense

Never mind that all Triloka items are 20% off all December long, or that there’s a large variety of beautiful incense holders, jewelry and decorative ornaments that compliment their extensive library of lovely smelling incense sticks, OR that Triloka items are fair trade, ethically sourced or handcrafted…
Just kidding, those are all valid points of why these are AWESOME!

BROO handcrafted Beer Shampoo, Conditioners & Body Wash

Beer shampoo, with it’s long history traced from ancient Egypt to Europe to America in the 1960’s, has been used for centuries to give hair an extra bounce and shine! Hops, oatmeal and citrus? Yes! Frat house? NO!

stocking+stuffers, mustache+wax

True Wax Hand Crafted Mustache Wax For the True Man!
Finally, after years of being the bushy calling card of villains, creepy uncles and typically the wrong sort of chap, The Mustache has come to it’s rightful place on the upper-lip of  the modern Gentleman. Beeswax, clove oil and natural ingredients will make the ends of any gentlemen’s whiskers curl like the smoke from Sherlock Holmes’s long stemmed Briar wood pipe!

stocking+stuffers, fir+incense

Juniper Ridge Douglas Fir & Juniper Incense Sticks
If you do not know much about Juniper Ridge, I ardently suggest you take a poke around their website. Wilderness lovers through and through, the folks at Juniper Ridge make it their mission to bring nature to you in it’s most honest and alluring form. Taking a stand against the petro-chemical fragrances popularized in the main stream, they go out into the open forest air to harvest real plant trimmings. Be it Cedars in the Siskiyou coastal mountains or Juniper from the woodlands of Eastern Sierra Nevada, this incense will warm the hearts of those who love the rustic smell of campfires and the comforting scent of a crackling fireplace.

stocking+stuffers, fair+trade, Dr+Bronners, Castile+soap

Dr. Bronner’s Natural Certified Fair Trade Pure Castille Soap – Travel Size

Needing little introduction, Dr. Bronner’s USDA organic and fair trade soaps have made a huge impact on the health conscious community. Support a company that donated over $250,000 to support prop 37, the proposition that would have made it mandatory for companies to label all GMO’s in their food. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps is clearly a brand that cares about your health. Share the love!

stocking+stuffers, fair+trade, fingerless+mittens

Lakhay Knit Fingerless Gloves
Beautiful knit gloves on the outside, warm black fleece on the inside! When you aren’t hand in hand with your loved ones, keep theirs warm with this winter wonder wear. Made and fairly traded by woman artisans in Nepal, these beauties are available in ALL sorts of colors and styles!

Father’s Day Gift Ideas for the Active Dad

Show Love and Appreciation to Dad!

It’s an orange and grey fall morning in 1994. The streets of Pasadena California are littered with dry leaves that crunch beneath my small LA Gear light-up sneakers. There’s a breeze but it’s pleasantly warm.

As my dad, my older sister and I take our morning walk to school, we point out the neighbor’s strangely shaped hedges, flowers and trees. I point to a series of tall weedy looking bushes that stretch up passed the perimeter fence of a corner house.
Me and my dad in his “Beetlejuice” hair stage
circa 1994

“Those are the guards for the mermaid princess” I squeak, my tiny fingers pointing with urgency, my eyebrows bending up in the middle with genuine excitement. My sister runs ahead to a bed of multicolored pansies, their faces splattered with black splotches that look undoubtedly and eerily like frowning, sullen expressions.

“These are mer-people who were turned into seaweed by the evil Sea-Witch!” she gasps, as if she had just made a true grave discovery. This continues for the 15 minutes that it takes to reach our elementary school.
My dad chimes in here and there with goofy discoveries of his own, but mostly he just walks and listens to his kids using their imaginations.
I don’t remember much about my life when I was 7 years old but I’ll never forget my walks to school with my dad. He still takes his walks, although these days it’s with his dog Scoob.
Just like mothers, fathers can mean different things to different people; a biological relation, a person who stepped in to raise you as their own, a best friend or hero. It matters less how they are your father, but why they are your father.

This Sunday, June 17th, is Father’s Day and while the good ol’ neck tie-shaped cookies and cards are always great, this year it might be nice to give a Father’s Day gift that is absolutely priceless: his health.

Here are a couple gift ideas for the active dad!, Lassen's, Gift+Ideas+Dad
  • Think Sport stainless steel 25 oz bottles come in bright vibrant colors such as green, purple, orange and blue (my favorite!) as well as silver and matte black. They also come with a removable mesh filter for keeping ice from attacking your face or brewing tea on the go.
  • Livestrong SPF 30 sunscreen by ThinkSport donates a portion of each sale to the fight against cancer. It’s a mineral based sunscreen with 20% zinc oxide and no parabans, PABA or harmful chemicals.
  • Builder Bars from Clif are not only delicious but they also yield 20 grams of protein in 1 bar as well as 23 vitamins and minerals.
  • Lassen’s Hit the Trail organic prepackaged bulk trail mix is the perfect snack companion for those long trails and bike rides in the beautiful outdoors., Lassen's, Gift+Ideas+Dad
  • Herban Cowboy shave soap is 100% vegan and uses organic oils to ensure a close shave and smooth skin.
  • Sweet Woods natural cologne by SB for Men may inspire a sudden walk through the nearest park. Hints of sandalwood and balsam make this woodsy cologne a nice gift for a lover of the outdoors.
  • Tree Free has a lovely variety of Father’s Day cards printed on recycled paper and printed with soy based inks., Lassen's, Gift+Ideas+Dad
  • Fish oils like Renew Life’s critical omega are very important for heart & joint health, especially in aging men. 1 capsule delivers 800mg of omega 3 fatty acids as well as 5mg of Lipase, the enzyme that helps to break down fats, thereby helping against those nasty fishy burps.
  • A good multivitamin is also very important. Garden of Life makes it easy with their RAW ONE FOR MEN one-a-day raw multivitamin. This whole food multivitamin also has a raw probiotic and enzyme blend for extra immune and digestive support.

For many of us it can be difficult to try to come up with a way to give your father back even a fraction of what he’s given you. No amount of cookies or cards can equate the years of sacrifice and love he’s put into making you the person that you are today. All you can do is love your father everyday for who he is and do your part to make sure that you get to spend many more years with him.

Have a wonderful Father’s Day!, Lassen's, Gift+Ideas+Dad

Mother’s Day All Natural Homemade Solid Perfume

She could be the woman who brought you into this world. She could be the woman who raised you, fed you, clothed you. She could be a trusted friend, confidante or mentor.
She may have been the one you ran from when it was bath time
or the one who you ran to when the world seemed scary.
She may be somewhere very close or somewhere very distant, but
she’s right there with you every time you do a good deed and show kindness to another.

Whoever Mother is to you, Sunday, May 13th is HER DAY!

Let’s make it special!, Lassen's, Mother's+Day, DYI+Solid+Perfume

When I was little I used to do arts and crafts in school for Mother’s Day;

writing a silly poem using the letters in the word “MOTHER”, gluing noodles to a sheet of construction paper in the shape a flower or frosting cupcakes with hot pink (and practically inedible) sugar paste.
As I’ve grown up all of the drawings, poems & baking atrocities that my Mom treasured have been replaced by neat, clean and paid for flowers and chocolates (which, given the past, I’m sure she appreciates). However, I know that there’s something about the handmade gift that touches a parent’s heart more than anything money can buy.

mothers+day, DIY+solid+perfume

This Mother’s Day I’d like to share a recipe for a solid perfume using beeswax and essential oils.

Until recently, I hadn’t ever heard of solid perfume. I found that it has its roots in Egyptian history as a scented balm that is rubbed on the skin using fingers or (in modern times) a cotton swab. It has since been modified and and redesigned to be more compact and portable. I like this idea for a Mother’s Day gift because it allows for you to be very specific to your Mom’s taste. You can make a custom fragrance based on smells that you know she likes or ones that remind you of her. For instance, I’m going to make my mom a rose perfume because of a memory that I have as a child of my mom growing roses in the backyard.

Without further ado, I give you…

Homemade All Natural Solid Perfume for Mom

You will need:
• 1 Tbsp grated organic beeswax or beeswax beads (affordably available in bulk at select Lassens locations!)
• 1 tsp Now jojoba oil
• 12- 16 drops Aura Cacia organic essential oil fragrance of choice.
• 1 glass jar
• 1 small cooking pot
• 1 decorative container or perfume locket

(Note: In these images I tripled the recipe to fill 2 larger candy containers.
The recipe as follows make about 2 Tablespoons worth of perfume.
You may adjust recipe depending on amount of perfume needed.)
Pour beeswax into glass jar.

Place glass jar in small pot. Fill pot with 2-3 inches of boiling water and on stove top on low.

DIY+solid+perfume, DIY+perfume

Once the wax begins to melt turn off the heat. Stir wax (with the other hot-pad protected hand securing the jar in the pot)

add essential oils and jojoba oil.

Pour mixture into decorative container and let cool.

DIY Container Ideas:

Find an antique perfume locket at a thrift store or online and fill it with the perfume.
For a personal touch, pour mixture into and old mint or candy tin.
I used 2 old Xyla mint tins that happened to already have beautiful quotes on the inside lid.

Paint the outside with chalk paint (this will take a few layers of paint) and write a special message to Mom!

Pair your solid perfume with a complementary organic chocolate bar and flowers (after-all, I’m sure she still loves your grown-up gifts).
