There’s something so tasty about grilling with fantastic seasonings. Meats, vegetables, even fruits come alive with just the right punch of flavor. But the seasoning aisle is often a maze of I-have-no-idea-what-to-get. Never fear, here’s a great answer!
Gene always loved to mix together rub seasonings for the barbecue, and his flavor combinations gained quite a reputation with his family, friends, and church community in the San Fernando Valley. For the last 15 years he would make extra when he was entertaining, and people would ask him to share. He would get input from everyone that tasted his rub. He wanted to know what people liked! Over time he developed his recipe by trial and error–a little bit of this and a little bit of that. He’d make a great batch and then when it was gone, he had to figure it out all over again. Finally about 5 years ago, he finalized the recipe and wrote it down so that it was consistent.
After Gene and his wife Paulette retired, they decided to launch their own 2-man business making Cappy’s Dry Rub Seasonings. About 18 months ago they started mixing and packing it themselves, and Gene also developed several new varieties, including no salt, and spicy. Now they have one for fruits and vegetables as well. They started selling Cappy’s — after Paulette’s nickname for Gene — at farmer’s markets, and soon Lassen’s caught wind of their great products!
Gene and Paulette love to come to Lassen’s and give people a taste of their delicious rubs! Here they are in our Ventura Store, giving samples of their rubs on beef, chicken, and vegetables. The seasonings are great on tofu and fruit, too!
With the weather heating up, it might be time to break out the barbecue! Our delicious all natural, organic, responsibly grown meats, and 100% organic produce are great on the grill! But don’t get flummoxed in the seasoning aisle! Just go straight to the Cappy’s–it will make you happy! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist the pun!)
